Ultimate Rescue is a documentary series in which every second counts.

It’s an original, one-of-a-kind look at the Quebec police (the SQ) force’s search-and-rescue helicopter team. The rescue squad agreed to give our cameras exclusive access so we can watch them as they go about their day-to-day work and on rescues. The team helps over 1,600 people every year, or about five people a day. The province of Quebec is vast and wild. It’s easy to get lost or for situations to become life-or-death. The SQ’s search-and-rescue team is not well known to the public. Its job is to find people who are lost in the forest or in the city or are in distress, and to carry out rescues— sometimes in extreme conditions.

Every search is considered an emergency, and interventions must happen quickly because victims’ survival may be at stake. Interesting fact: only 1 in 600 police officers meet the physical and psychological requirements to do this high-risk job. The current team has four members, but it is planning to expand. Our film crew had the privilege of monitoring, over several months, the first recruiting competition for the squad, which was open to the 8,000 police officers employed by the SQ. Ultimate Rescue is not for the faint of heart. The tension of rescue workers and the fear of people being rescued are always obvious on-screen.
